This is a stratovolcano with volatile-rich basalt, similar to Mt Etna in Sicily or any number of volcanoes in Iceland. Normally basalts are associated with relatively calm shield volcanoes (like those in Hawaii), but in some cases basalts mix with volatiles (water and gases) or felsic materials to produce much more explosive eruptions. This volcano is erupting both low viscosity lavas (running down the cone) as well as pyroclastic material (the "ash" clouds to the left side of the picture).
